James Bay Frontier

The James Bay frontier is one of the more remote parts of Ontario, and represents the northern-most stretches of Highway 11.

Largely francophone and dependent on forestry, major towns in the James Bay Frontier include Iroquois Falls, Cochrane, Smooth Rock, Kapuskasing, and Hearst. However, with 50 000 residents, Timmins dawrfs all of them in size and amenities.

This portion of Highway 11 is interesting because it is much more populated than its western counterparts, but also features some of the smallest surviving hamlets found on the highway, such as Val Gagné, Fauquier, Mattice, and the ever-present Moonbeam.

NEW - I'm testing a comment feature that will allow you to post your stories, experiences, and input on each town. I'm testing it for the James bay communities first, before deploying it all over the site.

To continue into the James Bay Frontier, start in Val Gagne (if you’re travelling northwest) or Highway 11 (if you’re travelling east).
